    Rector of Mater Ecclesiae College (est. 1614), affiliated with St Mary’s University, and Professor in the University's School of Theology. Educated in mathematics at the University of Cambridge, followed by a PGCE at St Mary’s and studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. Ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Basil Hume in 1984. Earned a DPhil in theology from the University of Oxford in 1990. Previously served as Assistant Priest at Our Lady of Victories, Kensington; Research Fellow at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge; and Lecturer in Systematic Theology at Heythrop College, University of London. From 2006 to 2023 held the Carl J. Peter Chair of Systematic Theology and Ecumenism at The Catholic University of America, where he also served as Acting Dean (2014–15), and is now Professor Emeritus. Former member of the International Theological Commission (2004–14) and participant in official Catholic–Methodist and Catholic–Anglican dialogues. Since 2005, member of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.
